An 8th century inscription indicates that king Shiva Deva had Sivapura as his capital and had the Shiva Durga, a fort. The name Durg comes from Shivadurga. The Kalachuri dynasty ruled the Durg region from 1182 to 1742. Then the Marathas took over. The British rule began in 1877.
Durg district is rich in minerals and in forest produce. With the huge backing of the Bhilai Steel Plant, Durg is in a position to develop many small and medium-sized industries.
