Durgapur â?? the steel city

Durgapur derives its name from a landlord, Durgamohan Chattopadhyay, of Gopinathpur. His family along with other Chatterjee families owned most of the land on which Durgapur has developed. Archaeological excavations close to Durgapur have come up with 5000 BC stone implements. Excavations near Pandu Rajar Dhibi have indicated the presence of a civilization linked with the Indus Valley.

But todayâ??s Durgapur is all about industry. It has real big industries. The city was planned by US architect Joseph Allen Stein in early 1950s. A long list of big industrial units followed in quick succession. In 1955, the Damodar Valley Corporation built a dam. Its next contribution was the Durgapur Thermal Power Station.

The huge Durgapur Steel Plant began producing steel in 1960. Its alloy steel unit was completed in 1965. The Mining and Allied Machinery Corporation, Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation, Durgapur Cement, and Ispat Forgings were set up in quick succession. Along with them, the private sector was busy establishing units like ACC-Vickers Babcock, Philips Carbon Black and Sankey Wheels. Comparatively smaller units also took shape in the meantime. It was the coming up of a great industrial city.

Durgapur was moving ahead on the education front too. The Regional Engineering College was set up in 1960. It has now become one of the National Institutes of Technology. The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute brought technological studies to the region. Now Durgapur is witnessing the growth of the IT industry. It has seen the opening of a dozen higher education institutes in recent years. They include engineering and management colleges. The real estate scene has picked up with the coming up of many housing projects. Shopping malls and multiplexes are flourishing. A software technology park too is making Durgapur proud.
