Burdwan is famous in the whole world for the finger licking sweet dishes they offer. The most famous and unique being the SitaBhog and Mihidana. There is a story behind it. Lord Curzon once wanted to visit the King of Burdwan when British ruled India. In order to welcome the Viceroy with sweets, the king ordered the local sweet makers to make something delicious, which has to be traditional and unique at the same time. Then only a local vendor came up with the rare recipe of SitaBhog and Mihidana, which later on became world famous.
Apart from the sweet dishes, rice is the staple food of local people here. Burdwan is also known as the rice bowl of India. Bengali dishes have a major influence as most of the people residing here are Bengalis. That is why fish is also a very integral part of the local cuisine served here.
