Misav Pav – This is not only tasty but quite nutritious too. This is a thin and spicy sprouts curry that is garnished with sev, lime and onion and served with white fresh bread. Your taste buds will feel happy with each bite of this delicacy, which is enjoyed mostly for breakfast.
Vada Pav – this is the Marathi version of burger. A trip to Maharashtra is incomplete without relishing on this spicy vadas made of potatoes and fried in a very thin batter. The batter is then placed inside a soft pav and topped with red or green chutney. If you like, they will offer you green chillies as well. Also this is a very affordable dish.
Thalipeeth – You will not find this taste new if you have tasted missi rotis and theplas before. Thalipeeth is mixed dough of flour with spices and onions flatted on a tawa. It is then roasted into a super delicious, crispy item. This dish is full of spicy butter and tastes too delicious. You can also add vegetables of your own choice to Thalipeeth.
Sabudana Vada – Sabudana vada is very chewy, crispy and flavorsome vada that is made using lots of crushed peanuts and sago. These are a treat to a hungry stomach. Worth being a little overweight for! And if you do not like fried food much, you can try the Sabudana khichdi. Same ingredients are used to make it and it tastes equally delicious.
Suralicha Vadya – A very delicate dish, it instantly melts in the mouth. You might not have heard of this dish before but once you taste it, you will want to eat it again. Suralicha vadya is prepared with steamed flour which is spread on kitchen top when hot and topped with coriander, tadka and coconut. The batter is then rolled into mini rolls which look really pretty and tempting.
Varan Bhaat – This is soul food for all Marathis. This is their staple food and it spells a mother’s warm love. This is a dal spiced with salt and heeng and served on hot rice along with homemade ghee, a little lime and homemade prickle too.
Kaande Pohe – This is one dish which is prepared in almost every Marathi household. This dish is popular among the snacks served when a boy goes to a girl’s house to meet her. Kaande Pohe can be found elsewhere in India too but it is only the Maharashtrian one which tastes heavenly. Every Marathi mother has fed her child a big plate of Pohe on the morning of school exam.
