Karnal, which actually comes from the name Karnalaya, is the rice bowl of India. Many historians claim that Karnalaya was founded by Karna, the ace warrior about whom we read in Mahabharata.

Old Fort: The famous visiting site of Karnal, which was constructed by Raja Gajpat Singh. It was built in 1764 AD.
Kalander Shah’s Tomb: This tomb is in memory of Muslim Sage Bo Ali Kalander Shah and was built by Delhi Sultanate Emperor Ghiasuddin. This tomb is situated outside the town and is made of marble. This structure has a lot of sculptures and a kettle drum balcony.
Cantonment Church Tower: This is a massive old tower, which has a height of 100 ft. It was built in 1841 AD.
There are other historical instances, which can be found while visiting Devi Temple, Dargah Noori, Miran Sahib’s Tomb and the Karna Tank. This Karna Tank is named after King Karna, who was the son of God Sun. He was an ace warrior and a terror to the Pandavas as we read about him in Mahabharata.

Being a part of Haryana, local Karnal cuisine has a great influence of North Indian cuisines. The spices that are used are cumin seeds, green chillies, and fennel. Garlic and ginger are also used in plenty amount in their dishes. The local people here are mainly non vegetarian and the most common delicacies served here are Butter chicken, Chicken Tandoori and most importantly the mouth watering kebabs. When you are travelling here, you must not miss the fresh kheer made and served here. The fresh cow milk is condensed and sugar and dry fruits are added to it to make a delicious sweet dish. Apart from that, lassi made of yogurt and dry fruits are also very common drink here.
