Overview of Anand Vihar Railway Station – ANVT

Anand Vihar railway station (codenamed ANVT) is located at the Anand Vihar region of the Capital city of Delhi, India. The station is the largest in the region, and also, has a metro station for inter-city transport. This station falls under the Delhi division, which is part of Northern Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The station was opened for public use on December 19, 2009 by former Union Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee. Anand Vihar station is under expansion and the 42-hectare terminal will be the largest railway station in North India and cater to all the East bound trains from Delhi region. The station is equipped with three platforms in the first phase. The station came into existence due to the growing passenger traffic on the three main railway stations: Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi. Anand Vihar is on the other side of the River Yamuna and provides an ideal location for the mega railway terminal for the entire East bound trains from Delhi. So the station is the terminal station for trains bound to states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, and other North-Eastern states.

Anand Vihar station was operational ready with regular trains running from March 2010. The nearby New Delhi station handled close to 500,000 passengers a day and posed many logistic problems, and this led the Northern Railways to develop Anand Vihar as the origin station for some of the major trains. There is a shift of passenger traffic from a highly dense New Delhi Station to the Anand Vihar station. The next phase of the expansion program at the station will see four more platforms added to the existing three to accommodate more trains, which will be diverted from the prime New Delhi Station. After the completion of phase 2 of the expansion project, the station will have a capacity to handle over 300,000 passengers daily and close to 270 trains would cross over the station per day. The total estimated cost to build this terminal is 2.4 billion and would include a new Passenger Reservation system (PRS). This proposed project will ease the traffic at all the three central stations, and the Northern Railways will also develop this station as a hub for the sub-urban train network. The locality already has an elevated metro station on the blue line of the Delhi Metro Network. This metro station is the hub of East Delhi and is connected with the Inter State Bus Terminal and the Railway station.

The famous places to visit in Anand Vihar are Shiv Mandir (0.8 KM), Raghunath Mandir (1.6 KM), Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple (1.7 KM), and others. The proximity of the bus services near the station makes this ideal mode to transport into the city.

The station was the end of the landmark railway line that connects New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. The 87 kilometres long railway line runs through ridges and is one of the technological miracles. The narrow gauge railway line is elevated at maximum level of 2200 meters at Darjeeling from 100 meters at New Jalpaiguri station. Darjeeling railway division is awarded the World Heritage Site status for this landmark engineering feat, and even today the toy train provides daily commute to passengers. The administrative control of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society is with the Indian Railways from 1948 onwards. The Northeast Frontier Railway Zone of Indian Railways is responsible for the maintenance of the tracks and revenues generated from the operations. The headquarters of the railway is located in Kurseong town.

    The scheduled services from the Darjeeling railway station provide unique experiences to tourists to enjoy the nature beauty as the trains make to their destination. The daily tourist train from Darjeeling to Ghum, which is the highest railway station in India at the height of 2258 meters, is run with vintage British built steam locomotives and is popular choice for tourists during their visit to the city. The famous Ghum Buddhist monastery and the Batasia loop, the longest curve bent within the railway system are special attractions in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway system. The landslide is very common in the Northern India, and there are many railway disruptions due to this reason over the last few years. The operations between Kurseong and Siliguri station were discontinued after a series of frequent landslides in 2010 causing havoc among the passengers on the safety of the railway system. Overview of Railway Stations in Visakhapatnam

    Indian Railways is a government owned enterprise and has been serving the economy and people of India from over 150 years. It has been a major means of transport for people and goods all over the country due to its efficient services and affordable fares. Indian Railways is listed in top ten largest rail networks in the world and has a total of more than 800 stations and a rail network of more than 115,000 Km with three type of gauges namely narrow gauge, metre gauge and broad gauge.

    Visakhapatnam is a major cosmopolitan city of the state of Andhra Pradesh in south India. People here from all over India reside here. Visakhapatnam has been developed as a premier economic development centre of India with many sectors flourishing here such as fishing, IT, Pharmaceuticals, Sea trade, shipping, etc. The harbour, roads and railway connectivity of this city are the major reasons for its rapid growth as an economic hub. Another revenue generating factor of this city is tourism and Railways play an important role in that.

    Visakhapatnam has two major stations in the city named as Visakhapatnam Railway Station and Duvvada Railway Station;

    • Visakhapatnam Railway Station –

    Visakhapatnam Railway Station or VSKP is the primary railway station situated at Gannapuram in Visakhapatnam. In the past, it was named as Walt air railway station, but in the year 1987, it was changed to Visakhapatnam Railway Station by the city mayor Mr. D. V. Subbarao. It has an elevation of 5.9 metres above the sea level and is controlled by Walt air Railway division of East Coast Railway Zone of Indian Railways. It lies on the main Chennai-Howrah line and bypasses the Central station. Three major railway lines that pass through this station are Visakhapatnam-Khurda road Section, Kirandul-Visakhapatnam line and Vijaywada-Visakhapatnam section.

    The Visakhapatnam railway station is a terminal station, hence, it is necessary for any train coming to this station to go backwards in order to proceed further. Due to this, there is a lot of time wasted in the process of entry and exit of the trains to the station. Although there are many trains that are limited to the Duvvuda station, yet there are a large number of trains arriving at this station. An average time 20 minutes is taken by each train to reverse the direction of the locomotive and depart from the station.

    Sometimes, when many trains have to arrive at the same platform, the platform is not available. In that case, the trains that are running late from their schedule are stopped at Duvvada. An efficient Route Relay Interlocking system helps in keeping trains running without conflicting the movements.

    In the year 1974, the first railways service from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad was introduced. The major trains that use this station are Duronto express, Godavari Express, Visakhapatnam-Kollam express, Ratnachal express and many more.

    The station has eight platforms and 10 broad gauge tracks. All the platforms are connected with foot over bridges. Platform no 4 and 5 have been equipped with escalators recently on the occasion of Ugadi day.

    Due to Visakhapatnam station being very busy, the most prevalent problem faced by passengers is non-availability of tickets and berths. Most of the trains get reserved for the passengers of remote places. Due to this reason, many trains originating from Bhubaneswar have been extended to Visakhapatnam.

    • Duvvada Railway Station –

    Duvvada Railway station or DVD is another major station in Visakhapatnam district and was built as a suburban stoppage on the main line as the main line crossing the Visakhapatnam bypasses the central station. Development of Duvvada station has helped a lot in improving the railway services in that area. The Duvvada station is controlled by Walt air Division of Indian railway. When the Visakhapatnam steel plant was established, a large number of people started commutation from neighbouring cities, and this led to an increased pressure on the Visakhapatnam Railway station. In order to reduce the stress on the Visakhapatnam station, Duvvada station was developed to serve the population of southern outskirts of the district. It handles more than one lakh passengers daily.

    It has a total of four platforms with broad gauge tracks. It has a large parking space for around 500 vehicles at a time. Other facilities that are available at the station are refreshment stalls, waiting hall and computerised ticket windows.

    These are the two railway stations serving the population of Visakhapatnam and contributing to the rapid growth and development of this city.
