Both the tracks from Sarai Rohilla to Delhi station were upgraded into broad gauge soon, ending the running of meter gauge trains from the Delhi station. All meter gauge trains terminated and started from Sarai Rohilla terminus. Overview of Anand Vihar Railway Station – ANVT

Anand Vihar railway station (codenamed ANVT) is located at the Anand Vihar region of the Capital city of Delhi, India. The station is the largest in the region, and also, has a metro station for inter-city transport. This station falls under the Delhi division, which is part of Northern Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The station was opened for public use on December 19, 2009 by former Union Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee. Anand Vihar station is under expansion and the 42-hectare terminal will be the largest railway station in North India and cater to all the East bound trains from Delhi region. The station is equipped with three platforms in the first phase. The station came into existence due to the growing passenger traffic on the three main railway stations: Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi. Anand Vihar is on the other side of the River Yamuna and provides an ideal location for the mega railway terminal for the entire East bound trains from Delhi. So the station is the terminal station for trains bound to states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, and other North-Eastern states.

Anand Vihar station was operational ready with regular trains running from March 2010. The nearby New Delhi station handled close to 500,000 passengers a day and posed many logistic problems, and this led the Northern Railways to develop Anand Vihar as the origin station for some of the major trains. There is a shift of passenger traffic from a highly dense New Delhi Station to the Anand Vihar station. The next phase of the expansion program at the station will see four more platforms added to the existing three to accommodate more trains, which will be diverted from the prime New Delhi Station. After the completion of phase 2 of the expansion project, the station will have a capacity to handle over 300,000 passengers daily and close to 270 trains would cross over the station per day. The total estimated cost to build this terminal is 2.4 billion and would include a new Passenger Reservation system (PRS). This proposed project will ease the traffic at all the three central stations, and the Northern Railways will also develop this station as a hub for the sub-urban train network. The locality already has an elevated metro station on the blue line of the Delhi Metro Network. This metro station is the hub of East Delhi and is connected with the Inter State Bus Terminal and the Railway station.

The famous places to visit in Anand Vihar are Shiv Mandir (0.8 KM), Raghunath Mandir (1.6 KM), Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple (1.7 KM), and others. The proximity of the bus services near the station makes this ideal mode to transport into the city.

The station was the end of the landmark railway line that connects New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. The 87 kilometres long railway line runs through ridges and is one of the technological miracles. The narrow gauge railway line is elevated at maximum level of 2200 meters at Darjeeling from 100 meters at New Jalpaiguri station. Darjeeling railway division is awarded the World Heritage Site status for this landmark engineering feat, and even today the toy train provides daily commute to passengers. The administrative control of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society is with the Indian Railways from 1948 onwards. The Northeast Frontier Railway Zone of Indian Railways is responsible for the maintenance of the tracks and revenues generated from the operations. The headquarters of the railway is located in Kurseong town.

The scheduled services from the Darjeeling railway station provide unique experiences to tourists to enjoy the nature beauty as the trains make to their destination. The daily tourist train from Darjeeling to Ghum, which is the highest railway station in India at the height of 2258 meters, is run with vintage British built steam locomotives and is popular choice for tourists during their visit to the city. The famous Ghum Buddhist monastery and the Batasia loop, the longest curve bent within the railway system are special attractions in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway system.
