However, after Western Railways moved from DC to AC electric conversion in 2012, it has been pulled by WAP 4 from Vadodara to Ambala Cantonment followed by WDM 3 twins starting from Ludhiana until Jammu Tawi. After the electrification of Jalandhar and Jammu section, the train is being hauled all the way from Bandra Terminus to Jammu Tawi by WAP4E.

This is how it got its name of Frontier Mail. As per the biography of Subhash Chandra Bose, he used this very train to escape from a house arrest in Calcutta to Bombay and then to Peshawar using the Frontier Mail service. It has also been mentioned in the biography of famous actor Prithviraj Kapoor, who used Frontier mail to travel from his hometown in Peshawar to Mumbai in 1928 for acting in movies.
