A Green corridor between Rameswaram and Manmadurai! Neat Initiative by Indian Railways.

With around 65,808 Kms of Railway lines In India, the railways is taking a baby step finally towards discharge free rail tracks. Towards May end, nearly 114km of line between Manmadurai and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu is to be converted into a Green and Zero toilet discharge line.

With the breathtaking Pamban Bridge that spans a 2 km-strait falling in the planned green corridor, the zero discharge measure will be welcomed by tourists.

A zero can release area imagines all trains going on that specific course would have bio-toilets which dispense with open release of waste on the tracks.

There are around 14 stations amongst Rameswaram and Manmadurai and around 16 traveler trains utilize the track in a day.

Bio-toilets take out open release of waste on the track as the waste is processed by extraordinarily created microscopic organisms and just little measure of clean water is released simultaneously.

In the second stage, “Kanalus-Dwarka-Okha and Porbunder-Wansjalya segment in Gujarat have been distinguished to be made zero latrine release areas.

As per the arrangement, Jammu-Katra course will likewise be made a zero-release area.

Railroads have introduced more than 20,000 bio-toilets in trains till now and has set an objective to fit 17,000 more this financial. It costs about Rs 3.5 lakh to introduce four zero toilets in a boogie.

Bio-Toilets to be installed in Train Engines for Drivers!

The engines of Indian Railway Trains now will have its own little Bio-Toilet installed.

The toilets will be modern with its own intelligence. For example, to ensure safety, the toilet door will not open while the train is moving. Once the train halts to a stop, the toilet can be used. Also, while the driver is inside the toilet, Brakes will be engaged and cannot be released until the driver comes out.

This little step to serious comfort of the driver was also publicized by our Railway Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu in the 2016-17 Rail Budget speech.

India has close to 60,000 train drivers working currently including a growing number of female drivers. They will be hopeful of the realization of this initiative.

Water Train to Parched Latur a Heaven Sent

The Indian Railways has sent a ‘water train’, a train carrying 5,50,000  litres of drinking water as per a humanitarian gesture to the parched district of Latur, in Maharashtra state.

On Monday, April 11, the Indian Railways sent forth a train having 10 wagons to carry the precious, life giving water from Miraj (Western Maharashtra) to Latur district in the region of Marathwada.

The train reached Latur at 4 a.m., after traversing a 375 km journey. It was welcomed with great cheer and fanfare. There was a sense of relief among top civil and police officials, the mayor of Latur and general public. At the same time, security was beefed up around the train to avoid any untoward incident.

Officials began off-loading of water in a dried up well owned by a local framer situated near the railways station. This water will be carried later to a filtration plant, using pipes.

After the process of filtration, which will make the water potable, water will be dispatched to remote villages in the district. Water will be transported in tankers to people who are awaiting the water with great expectation. There are kilometres of queues of colourful plastic and steel pots, pitchers and bucket made of hundreds of people who are waiting for water.

This water initiative was launched by Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Railways to help people in his home state reeling under water crisis. The crisis was especially severe in Latur district villages, which have a population of 2.45 crores.

As per instructions of Suresh Prabhu, 50 tank wagons like ones used to transport milk and oil were dispatched to Kota workshop in Rajasthan, where they were cleaned thoroughly and made ready for undertaking the journey to Sangli where they were filled with water.

Indian Railways is also planning more of such trips for water needs to fulfil the thirst of villages of Latur district. But the schedule of such trains has not yet been finalized. At present, 15,000 villages of the state mostly in Osmanabad, Beed and Latur district are reeling from severe water scarcity.

Latur has been rocked by stray incidents of violence related to water shortage. As such, the police has set up prohibitory orders till May 3. Also public reservoirs and storage tanks for water are being protected by armed guards of the police face.

Some villagers of the district had to trek over 12 kms for getting a pot of water. As such domestic water pots are kept secure under lock and key. There is a cessation of teaching at schools, which have been closed. Social events like marriage have also been stalled. Agriculture activities have come to a close.

The 10 wagons of the water train were dispatched to Latur from Miraj railways station (from Maharashtra’s’ Sangli district) where they were filled  with water. Each wagon had a capacity of 50,000 litres.

The district administration had got hold of a large well near the Latur station for storing the water, prior to curing at the filtration plant. The success of train running status of the water train is inspiring further action. A second water train made of 50 wagons is set to be ready to store and transport water to Latur, according to officials.

Rs. 8 Lakh Crore Infrastructure Projects For Indian Railways!

Indian Railways has announced the rolling out of an ambitious infrastructure augmenting program with an outlay of Rs. 8 lakh crore for the coming 4 years. This is to reverse the trend of underinvestment that has been plaguing the railways.

Capital expenditure of the railways had surged form Rs 57,000 crores (2014-2015) to Rs 97,000 crores (2015-2016) and is expected to scale Rs 1.21 lakh crores in the current fiscal.

Facing under investment, the govt. has planned this massive program for plumbing in Rs. 8 lakh crore in the next four years. This enormous infrastructure program would consist of capacity augmentation, high speed rail connectivity and station redevelopment.

Senior railway officials announced that they are drawing up a concrete infrastructure development plan to utilize around Rs. 8.5 lakh crores in the next four years.

Officials were optimistic that modernization of this public sector giant will generate opportunities for economic growth by multiple times. A National Plan for Railway Infrastructure Development is being designed to include infrastructure projects for the coming years. It will help in expanding services like train berth availability.

The plan envisions that a part of the plan expenditure will come from capital expenditure component of the railway budget. But a major portion of the investment is being expected through PPP (Public Private Partnerships), multi-lateral funding and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) funds.

With regard to the huge opportunities in investing in this sector, railway officials said that, on one hand, the LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) will provide a loan of Rs 1 lakh crores for expansion of railways whereas, on the other, efforts are afoot to get aid from foreign countries.

At present, the railways has  tie-ups with 13 countries for cooperating in the sector of railways. For instance, Railways has signed a deal with Japan, amounting to Rs 97636 crores for the sake of a high speed rail project in the Mumbai-Ahmadabad circuit.

Apart from the Mumbai- Ahmadabad circuit, railways is also making  a plan to link all metros with high speed trains, called as the Diamond  Quadrilateral project, which requires massive dose of investment for fast train availability.

With regard to station re-development, officials said that there was tremendous scope as over 408 major stations had been thrown open to attract participation by private sector.

The redevelopment program envisions vertical growth of stations by opening eateries, shopping malls, parking lots and much more. Online auctions are in the pipeline for opening up investment in stations for redevelopment projects.

Another option being explored by the railways is through private and public firms from their Social Responsibility Corpus (SRC). For the massive infrastructure program announced by the railways, the government plans to generate a part of the funds from CSR.

But the move to use CSR for improving railways is fraught with controversy. Some argue that Railways cannot use CSR as it is a commercial entity charging for its services and gaining profits. Others are of the opposite view and say that Railways can harness CSR for improving its services as the railways subsidizes most of its service to customers. While CSR is meant for non-profits, it can still be used for railways as it is a government subsidized service provider. Some also argue that this controversy is immaterial as CSR funds can barely make a dent in the massive fund for railways development.

Information about the Nearest Railway Station to Nainital

The most well connected city in the Kumaon range region of Uttarakhand is Kathgodam. Since it is a monstrous task to construct rail tracks in the mountain regions, it is also the final stop before Nainital and hence the nearest railway station to Nainital. The distance between Kathgodam and Nainital is about twenty five kilometres. It is as beautiful as the other places around it are, like Nainital, Ranikhet and Almorah. It is also the closest railway connectivity to the other two sisterly hill stations of Nainital.

Railway Connectivity

Kathgodam is well connected to almost all the major cities across the country, especially in the north since people keep coming here year after year to relish their summer breaks to the fullest. Being the major connectivity network to the Kumaon region, the railways station is quite well maintained and clean. Like all the major cities of Uttarakhand, even the cleanliness of Kathgodam is well maintained. Once you get here via train, there are numerous buses to Nainital and Almorah leaving the city from time to time. There are also cabs to take you to Nainital.

The city at a glance

Kathgodam itself is a very beautiful city, but somehow since it is just a junction for people to get to Nainital, the place does not get the appreciation and tourists that it deserves. The beauty of the place is rather alluring and when you are about to get here from train, the view along the railway lines is the proof of Kathgodam’s sanctity and beauty. Not only is it rich in beauty but also culture. It is the hub of celebrations with numerous festivals being celebrated with grandeur and royalty. Ram Navami and Makarsankranti are the two major festivals observed by the people here.

Accommodation facilities

Although Kathgodam isn’t that much of a tourist attraction as Nainital and Ranikhet, the place still gets some tourists in the rainy season owing to the beauty of this place that is further refined in the monsoon months, with lush green fields all around. There are several hotels here for accommodation and many cottages too that lie just near the jungle for people who visit this place to look at animals and are interested in wildlife photography. The hotels here have all the basic amenities that one looks for like internet, running water and good food among others.

The journey to Kathgodam by train becomes quite alluring once you are about to reach the destination since the place has so much of beauty surrounding it. You can feel the moist mountain air and the smell of pine trees lingering in the atmosphere. Being a small town, Kathgodam does not have any major buildings or shopping complexes but if you are here for some touring and spending time away from the monotonous city life, it is an ideal place. You can plan a day’s stay in Kathgodam and looks around this mesmerising little town before you move on to Nainital for a full fledged vacation.

Cyber Audit Ordered For Indian Railways

Indian Railways is ready to conduct a through cyber audit even as it recognized the vulnerabity of its online service network.

The ministry has ordered a compressive zone wise audit for its online system. This includes the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the communication network of the Indian Railways as well as online freight system which have been recognized as sensitive areas

The Minister of Railways had ordered a complete cyber audit of the total online network connected to the operation of railways in India. This audit is set be implemented in all sixteen zones of the Indian Railways and efforts will be undertaken so that the audit is fool proof and effective.

The idea of a cyber audit had been triggered off after hacking of a website in March, of the Bhusawal division’s personnel department of Central Railways, apparently by the Al Qaeda. The website content was changed by the hackers into a message exhorting every Indian Muslim to undertake Jihad to fight America. Thus, the system is at the threat of criminals like terrorists.

Official sources revealed that hackers were defacing 2000 to 3000 government websites every month. Senior officials were quick to note that the complete reservation system of the Railways was being conducted online and any interference in the network would completely mess up the system like disabling PNR Status Enquiry, besides causing enormous monetary losses.

Especially, internal communication between train operators is crucial for train services along with controlling of operations between stations. Officials pressed claims that recently an audit had been conducted on various IT related services of the railways, but it is the first time that there were plans afoot to conducts a cyber audit of the entire railway system. It is expected that auditors will detect systemic flaws and suggest remedial action.

The agencies deputed for the cyber audit are experts in the field of cyber-security. They will work in tandem with the CRIS (Centre for Railways Information System), which is an agency responsible for ticket booking in the Indian railways.

In addition, functional and security audits will be conducted, of the entire online operations of ticket booking services via the IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation). Some time back, the IRCTC had conducted an audit of its system to curb misuse by touts of its ticket booking website.

The Railways began computer operations, almost 30 years back with setting up of CRIS (Centre for Railways Information System) which is responsible for developing and maintaining crucial information systems of the Indian Railways.

But ever since, majority of railway zones have failed to have a potent cyber policy set up to boost immunity of railways against cyber attacks.

Officials of the IT department noted that IT security covers the following areas: understanding and managing risks involved; managing network security and traffic; protecting IT data, assets and applications; protecting personnel and infrastructure; Selecting and making operable effective controls to put in place integrity and confidentiality of communication systems, which transmit, store and process data.
